This week, U.S. News & World Report released its 2022 Best Colleges rankings of undergraduate programs.

Rankings are calculated across six main categories: student outcomes, faculty resources, expert opinion, financial resources, student excellence and alumni giving. Though the reliability and merit of these rankings has long been called into question by some education experts in the past, they still drive interest in universities for prospective students, and can call attention to the successes of individual programs or majors within each school.

Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University had a standout year on the list, ranking in the top ten of several categories, and as number one in many programs in its school of computer science. The University of Pittsburgh also held its own as a solid public school with a top nursing program and well-rated engineering program.

Both leaders in creating Pittsburgh’s tech talent pool, the strong standings of these two universities show that there remains an educational foundation for the industry as businesses continue to grow here. Particularly as schools push for a return to in-person learning, these high ratings have the potential to attract more prospective talent to Pittsburgh.
