Considering the regularity with which local news sites across the country are folding, Philadelphia is fortunate to have a relatively robust ecosystem of niche newsrooms.
Six of these outlets — each offering a nuanced angle on the complexities that make Philly great — are launching a new effort today to make sure that independent media in Philadelphia remains strong.
And it starts with your support.
The Philadelphia Independent Media Coalition is a partnership among Technical.ly, Generocity, Hidden City, the Philadelphia Public School Notebook, PhillyCAM and WURD Radio. Supported by an experimentation grant from the Lenfest Institute, the goal of PIMC is to demonstrate the importance of having multiple perspectives on local news.
The collective’s initial campaign encourages readers to share examples of important work from these independent news sites using the #SupportPHLNews hashtag. Additionally, interested parties can visit PH.LY to support one (or more) of these organizations via paid individual memberships.
Journalism is a pillar of strong, smart and vibrant cities. With your help, these Philadelphia newsrooms can continue their work of telling stories that make you a better citizen.
