edX, MIT and Harvard‘s massive open online course (MOOC) platform, offers free university-level courses but lacks the social interaction aspect of a more traditional classroom.

That’s why Neil Trenk founded the Philly edX Study Group: to create a “sense of community of a campus,” alongside “the flexibility and zero-tuition benefits of a MOOC,” he said. Group members will, as the name suggests, study together, discuss the course material and help motivate each other to keep with up with the course.

The study group is currently only for MITx’s Intro to Programming class, whose registration deadline has since passed, but in the future, Trenk said the study group might take on other courses and even other MOOC platforms.

At least one Philly startup, ApprenNet, has developed a MOOC platform. ApprenNet, led by a Drexel law professor, has offered a course on mergers and acquisitions.
