Johns Hopkins plays host to the Center for Government Excellence, a three-year-old center founded by Beth Blauer and Sharon Paley that helps cities around the country tap into data.
Next week, the local presence will result in a chance for Baltimoreans to learn from work in another city. At the September 18 Data Works MD meetup, GovEx Chief Data Scientist Matt Pazoles will give a talk on Kansas City’s use of data titled “Predictive Analytics and Neighborhood Health.”

According to the event description, the Missouri city faced an uptick in blighted properties following the 2008 foreclosure crisis, and as a result code enforcement had trouble keeping up with the properties falling into disrepair.
Pazoles will present on how the city and GovEx developed an algorithm to predict how long a given violation will take to resolve. That helps with follow-up inspections, and providing connections to community orgs.
The event starts at 6:30 p.m. inside the Bloomberg Center for Physics and Astronomy on JHU’s Homewood Campus (a personal favorite among buildings).
