Police-worn body cameras have been a hotly debated issue since their implementation was first floated by Delaware lawmakers back in 2014.
Police forces in Smyrna, Ocean View, Middletown, New Castle County, Bethany Beach, Delaware State University and University of Delaware are currently a part of a pilot program testing out body cameras. New Castle County Police previously ran a body camera pilot last July.
Carl Kanefsky, public information officer at Delaware Attorney General Matt Denn’s office, explained the purpose of the body cams to Delaware State News: “Having footage from police body cameras has been helpful in preparing for indictment and trial in some cases that are currently pending.”

Camera vendors Axon and Coban are providing the cameras for a 60-day trial period at no cost to these aforementioned agencies.
