Outage reports for Comcast and other ISPs flared up across the country on Friday afternoon, as the Philly-based comms giant was affected by a “fiber cut” from an infrastructure partner.

The provider said on its Twitter account that one of Comcast’s “large backbone network partners” suffered a fiber cut (or accidental break of the optic fiber network ) which affected its service, and that of other ISPs.

“[The cut] is currently affecting our business and residential internet, video and voice customers,” Comcast tweeted. “We apologize [and] are working to get services restored as soon as possible.”

Comcast has some 2 million customers in what it calls the “Freedom Region,” which encompasses Philadelphia, Northern Delaware, parts of New Jersey and the Philly suburbs.

A Comcast spokesperson did not immediately respond to Technical.ly’s request for comment.
