Comcast will purchase Time Warner Cable for $45B [Comcast Roundup]

It’s “a deal that would combine the biggest and second-biggest cable television operators in the country.” Expect a protracted lobbying effort and promises to avoid heavy regulator skepticism.

  • Comcast Set to Acquire Time Warner Cable for $45 Billion [New York Times]
  • Comcast Internet Customers: You Should Change Your Password [Slate] “Last week the hacking group NullCrew FTS hacked 34 (or possibly more) of Comcast’s servers and then published details about how to infiltrate the company’s mail servers on Pastebin. Comcast didn’t acknowledge the situation until the Pastebin post was removed more than a day later.”
  • Reports Say Netflix Slowing Down on Comcast [PhillyMag] “What started out as a trickle has grown to a torrent: Reports from around the country suggest that Comcast customers are having more trouble with Netflix service, increasingly getting hiccups,  stops and a generally slowed-down experience.”
  • Comcast Says ‘Nyet’ To Sochi Olympics Streams For Budget Subscribers [Forbes] “Frustrated Xfinity subscribers have been posting on Comcast’s forums with complaints of being locked out of Olympics coverage on their computers and mobile devices. While blocked access for some commenters appears to be the result of technical glitches, other customers are learning the hard way about a policy dictating that subscribers of Comcast (or any other cable provider) must have both the MSNBC and CNBC channels as part of their cable package to be eligible for live streaming. “
  • How Comcast Is Being More Russian Than Russia With The Olympics [Philebrity] “But the more we watch, the more we realize that NBC’s coverage of the games is oh-so-Comcast-y. After all, they now hold the NBC bag – they’ve even got the Flyers guy doing the Sochi graphics. Which means that, in the spirit of Seeking Solutions With Suzanne and It’s Your Call With Lynne Doyle and also the Comcast Get-Out-Of-TV-Jail Center, there is something at once lovably dippy and completely infuriating about how Comcast has been handling the games at Sochi.”
  • Comcast Adds Warner Bros. to Digital HD Offerings [Variety] “Frustrated Xfinity subscribers have been posting on Comcast’s CMCSA +0.45% forums with complaints of being locked out of Olympics coverage on their computers and mobile devices.”
  • Comcast customer surprised to learn new router is also public hotspot [Ars Technica] “Routers broadcast public Wi-Fi signals, unless you ask Comcast to turn it off.”
  • PhillyDeals: High rents forecast for Comcast tower [Philadelphia Inquirer] “Liberty Property Trust plans to charge rents “that are high $30s [per square foot], kissing $40,” to Comcast and any additional tenants for the company’s planned second Center City office tower, Liberty boss Bill Hankowsky told investors during a conference call this week.” Editor’s Note: For context, the average price for a square foot of Center City office space is $28, according to Select Greater Philadelphia data.
