Would the FCC allow Comcast to buy Time Warner Cable? [Comcast Roundup]

“Comcast executives reportedly believe that if their company decides to make a bid for Time Warner Cable, it’s unlikely the deal would face serious regulatory scrutiny since the two cable giants’ geographical markets don’t overlap much. In this, those executives are alone. Of course there would be scrutiny, and the Federal Communications Commission might well disallow the acquisition. … The problem wouldn’t be geography: It would be the enormous power Comcast could wield in the market for TV programming.”

  • Comcast eyes Time Warner Cable and unprecedented market power [Fortune] ” Comcast (CMCSA) executives reportedly believe that if their company decides to make a bid for Time Warner Cable (TWC), it’s unlikely the deal would face serious regulatory scrutiny since the two cable giants’ geographical markets don’t overlap much. In this, those executives are alone. Of course there would be scrutiny, and the Federal Communications Commission might well disallow the acquisition. … The problem wouldn’t be geography: It would be the enormous power Comcast could wield in the market for TV programming.”
  • Why Comcast and other cable ISPs aren’t selling you gigabit Internet [Ars Technica] “Cable companies haven’t been ignoring this consumer demand… but they haven’t done anything to satisfy it, either. Comcast demonstrated the “first ever 1Gbps broadband speed download over a production HFC [hybrid fiber-coaxial] network” two and a half years ago at the NCTA [National Cable and Telecommunications] conference, and the company showed off a 3Gbps technology at this year’s cable show.”
  • Comcast, Nielsen Unveil Plan to Get More Ad Money From Video On Demand [Variety] “Essentially, Comcast hopes to determine the viability of a new idea: What if advertisers could place the same commercials that accompany, say, this week’s airing of “NCIS” or “The Blacklist” alongside older episodes when they are streamed on-demand in a way that would please advertisers?”
  • Luukko out as president of Comcast-Spectacor [Philadelphia Business Journal] “Peter A. Luukko is out as president and chief operating officer of Comcast-Spectacor, where he was viewed by many as the man who would one day replace Ed Snider as chairman of the Philadelphia sports and entertainment company.”
