The state’s latest tech upgrades are looking to provide some help studying for the written driving test. Maybe it could even be fun.
Maryland’s Motor Vehicle Administration recently rolled out a new look to its MD Practice Driving Test app. The app offers 25 practice questions for the test, which is required to get a learner’s permit. Being a state where drivers routinely rank among the worst in the country, the department adds that it can also be used for “life-long learning.”

The app launched in 2012, so it was due for a refresh.
“We have made improvements to the app that will provide users with an even better experience as they prepare for their driving test or brush up on driver safety information,” MVA Administrator Christine Nizer said in a statement.
Along with a new look that does away with the paper notebook look, the questions were revised to directly reference the study manual for the test. It also seems the app will be looking more like an online quiz. There were some moves toward gamification with score-tracking and a display of the percentage of questions answered correctly.
Upgrades were handle by NIC Maryland, which manages the state’s website and digital tools for citizens. It carries out such projects at no charge to taxpayers through a self-funded eGovernemnt services contract with the State Department of Information Technology.
