Augmented reality is more than a craze

The tools that are rolling out suggest staying power. At the next BaltoMSDN meetup, Mind Over Machines' Tim Kulp discusses the uses, and demos how to build apps with AR.

Pokemon GO showed how augmented reality could bring people together (and get them perhaps a little too hooked to their phones). More than a year later, the game’s initial hype moment has passed. Yet, it’s becoming clearer that the technology which superimposes computer-generated images onto a real-world environment has plenty of other uses.
This week alone, Apple’s iOs 11 came loaded with a new ARKit that opens up possibilities, and IKEA dove into the space with a new app. In the local tech community, we’ve seen BaltiVirtual make a play with HoloTats, and team with others to take it on a trip to the museum.
For developers, there are big implications. At the next BaltoMSDN meetup on Sept. 27, Tim Kulp, is set to explore how those tools can be used to develop apps. Kulp, the director of emerging technology at Owings Mills–based dev firm Mind Over Machines, will offer design guidance and a coding demo. Plus, there will be plenty of talk about the future of AR.
“AR has all the components for success: support of major companies, an early killer app, developer interest, real world application – time to take it seriously,” the event description states.
The talk is set for Wed., Sept. 27, at the Baltimore Robotics Club in Lutherville-Timonium. Full details below:
