Baltimore Under Ground Science Space (BUGSS) received $189,000 in new funding, according to founder Tom Burkett.
The grant from the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation, which is distributed over 2.5 years, will be used to hire the nonprofit’s first paid employee: a full-time laboratory and program manager.
As a result, BUGSS will be open for longer and more regular hours on evenings and weekends. Additionally, the organization will develop some daytime programming, Burkett said.
Located below the Emerging Technology Centers campus at 101 N. Haven St., the three-year-old organization looks to expand access to biology beyond the classroom and public radio/television shows. Prior to the grant, BUGSS relied on an all-volunteer staff.
Last year, then-Technical.ly Baltimore reporter Tyler Waldman visited the space to find a group 3D-bioprinting and Burkett leading a session on the basics of genetic coding.
