When Geoffrey Welchman began his podcast in April 2010, he didn’t expect that his guest roster would include big-name comedians like Lewis Black, Internet-famous grammarians like Grammar Girl, and local celebrities like Aaron Henkin, producer of the WYPR show “The Signal.”
A sometime freelance writer, Welchman’s Inverse Delirium podcast — a spoof of public radio programs with new episodes posted twice a month — is recorded, written and produced from his home studio in north Baltimore. More than 75 episodes have been made so far. Each show is about 15 minutes long, and on the eve of its fourth anniversary, Inverse Delirium has been downloaded 38,000 times. Downloads per month, Welchman said, are at around 2,000.

Welchman makes no money from his podcast. His experience in radio production comes from his day job as a corporate trainer, where he does “multimedia production, editing and also record narration for online training courses,” he said via e-mail. His ready-made home studio comes from his days as a singer-songwriter and guitarist.
“I write 75 percent of the material myself, while my wife contributes ideas and concepts for the remaining quarter, and also helps with show titles,” Welchman said.
Here are some of the guests featured on the Inverse Delirium podcast:

  • Actor Kevin Pollak and comedian Paula Poundstone
  • Musician Ed Schrader, opera singer Megan Ihnen and Baltimore band Nelly’s Echo.
  • Touring comedians, including Wendy Liebman and Ryan Stout.
  • Fellow podcasters, including locals The Nerdpocalypse.
