187 companies formed from University System of Maryland research

The university system is considering creating an investment fund to financially support startups spun out from university research.

Research produced by the University System of Maryland played a role in forming 187 new companies in fiscal year 2013, according to the Baltimore Business Journal:

University system schools played a role in launching 187 companies in fiscal 2013, a 29 percent increase from 144 companies in fiscal 2012. Of those, 65 companies were Tier 1 and Tier 2 companies, considered to be the companies the university played the greatest role in forming. Tier 1 companies are those that are founded on technology licensed from a university. Tier 2 companies are startups that received a significant amount of university support.
