Two years ago, Jeff Dicken and the Baltimore Green Currency Association (BGCA) introduced BNotes to Baltimore. It’s the city’s alternative currency presently available in one- and five-dollar denominations. Ten U.S. dollars gets you 11 dollars’ worth of BNotes.
In April, at BNotes’ two-year anniversary, there were $33,000 of BNotes in circulation. Circulation has since increased to $35,000, and BNotes are now accepted at more than 210 businesses, including four new ones:
- Independent Home Services – Professional Residential & Small Business Cleaning
- Govans Community Acupuncture Clinic
- Baltimore Community Acupuncture
- Light Street Cycles
That’s right — buy a bicycle with local currency.

At the two-year mark, Technically Baltimore reported that Dicken wasn’t sure when the BGCA would do another printing of BNotes. But in an e-mail, Dicken said he and colleagues are now planning to have available 10- and 20-dollar denominations of BNotes “next year or as soon as practically possible.”
The Gathering food truck festival this Friday will donate a portion of the proceeds from selling drink wristbands to the Baltimore Green Currency Association. It’s free to attend. More information here.
