Andrew Kalish departs Downtown Brooklyn Partnership for the startup life.

Kalish has been an active member of the Brooklyn startup world for nearly four years, serving as the director of cultural development at the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership. He leaves this month for an undisclosed real estate startup in Manhattan which will launch in January.

“I’ve been fortunate to have had a front row seat to this neighborhood’s renaissance and am honored to have played a part,” Kalish wrote in an email about his time at the partnership.

Civil nabs Nicole Bode to be head of newsroom strategy.

Bode previously worked at the managing editor at DNAinfo, leaving this summer after eight years there and before the pub’s destruction. Before that she covered crime and breaking news at the Daily News. The journalism vet will bring that experience to the Gowanus startup trying to bring journalism into a new age and onto the blockchain.

“I joined Civil because the entire team — from CEO Matthew Iles on down — shares the same passion and belief that journalism, and its value to an engaged democracy, is a valuable commodity in and of itself, not just a commodity that should be jettisoned when it ceases to be profitable,” Bode told Technical.ly by email. “By putting the control over the funding model into the hands of the newsrooms and the readers themselves, not a third-party ad industry, Civil is moving ahead with a solution to this problem.”

Jeff Merritt heads to the World Economic Forum.

The director of innovation at the Mayor’s Office of Technology and Innovation will head to the World Economic Forum to head up its Internet of Things division. Merritt was with the city for nearly four years. Before that, he’d been at the Office of the Public Advocate.
