What will be the next big startup out of Brooklyn?
Tuesday night, the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership is hosting the Make It In BK pitch competition at City Point. Five women-founded startups will pitch to some impressive judges, and the winner will receive $5,000 for their startup as well as mentoring and networking help.
Previous winners of the competition have gone on to some pretty impressive accomplishments. Propel, which won in the winter of 2016, has gone on to raise a $4 million round of seed funding this spring, including investments from the rapper Nas, Andreessen Horowitz and basketball star Kevin Durant. Sightworthy, formerly known as Humblee, won in spring of 2016 and has gone on to go through an R/GA and Snap Inc. accelerator and seems to be doing well. Its founders, Zuley Clarke and Aneri Shah, were both just included in our list of women founders to know in Brooklyn.
Here’s who’s competing this time around:
- neMedIO: Revolutionizing the way high-tech robotic medical devices are brought to market.
- Miah Beauty: A membership-based luxury beauty brand for multicultural millennials.
- BunkUp: Mobile app dedicated to helping young professionals find roommates quickly and easily.
- Ovee: An application designed to help young women take control of their sexual and reproductive health.
- Street Smarts VR: Designed to leverage the immersive power of VR to improve the police training experience.
Tickets are $10.
