Do you ever look down at someone’s iPhone case and see how it has that little cutout on the back to make sure everyone can see the logo? Let’s call it the “yeah, I’m texting on an Apple product, I’m so cool” cutout. Well, you’ll soon have a bit more flexibility in selecting an iPhone case, thanks to a new web app accepted into MakerBot’s developer program. It’s called Fraemes.
Fraemes lets you customize much of your iPhone case using 3D printing.
Your custom-designed case can look like whatever you want it to, on the back. Part of the case is still traditionally manufactured and you have to purchase it from the company (or from a MakerBot store), but the part with the imagery, the back of the case, that’s totally up to you.
The case comes in two parts. The bumper (1), which goes around the phone and holds the back (2) in place. The bumper is made of rubber, for extra protection. It costs $12, though if you have a 3D printer you can also make it, if you want.
Then there’s the back. Fraemes has loads of designs you can buy from its site. You can also download many designs for free. A few others only cost a dollar. You can also make your own designs using Fraemes’ software and print it yourself, or take it to a MakerBot store to get made.
We previously wrote about MakerBot’s developer program (and the wicked software that lets makers design unbelievable action figures) after the company’s appearance at BuzzFeed. MakerBot is offering a chance to win a free case if you help them promote the partnership.
