This Week in Jobs: Ditch the Khakis Edition

Nixed internships, jobs and more.

Editor’s note: Every week we ship an email newsletter featuring the region’s most exciting career opportunities. We’ve lovingly called it This Week in Jobs (aka TWIJ — “twidge.”). Below is this week’s edition. Here’s the last one we published; it’s meant to live in your inbox. Sign up for the newsletter here.

Intern, Interrupted

While many local students are out protesting again this week, under more normal circumstances, summer internships would be starting right around now. But times are far from normal.

As companies are squeezed by COVID-19 spacing restrictions and the ongoing financial crisis, many have either rescinded summer internships or moved them entirely online, leaving this year’s students and recent grads disappointed to be missing out on the traditional summer internship experience — like grabbing iced coffees with, wait, was it two sugars or one?

America’s future workforce will also lose out on important in-person networking opportunities and on-the-job learning, from business-lunch etiquette (skip the spaghetti) to office politics. Some companies are trying to innovate, but this summer promises to be a challenge — especially when it’s mom or dad, and not a potential future work contact, telling you to go’fer coffee.

The News

Yes, we know: Our tech communities are striving to Make the World a Better Place. But the industry is among the worst offenders when it comes to hiring people of color, especially in leadership roles. If startups and entrepreneurs truly want to consider themselves changemakers, there is plenty of work to do. Fearless CEO Delali Dzirasa issued a call to action, with first steps that company leaders and employees can take to start addressing the inequities in the tech community.

From dating apps to fintech to trip-planning, D.C. is a hotbed of Black-owned businesses and startups. And as we look to create lasting impacts to address systemic racism and inequities, one easy step includes being intentional about supporting Black-owned businesses. Technical.ly put together a list of 10 in the District, but there are many others.

  • ElationLogic is seeking a Remote Senior Front-End Developer to work primarily with the UI/UX design team to bridge the gap between graphical design and technical implementation.
  • Prezly is looking for a Remote Marketing Director. Important geographical note: The company is only considering candidates who live within two hours of the Central European time zone, which is six hours ahead of the U.S. Eastern time zone.

The End

White-glove service is taking on new meaning as hotels and resorts start to slowly reopen while still protecting against COVID-19. If you’ve got the itch to get away this summer, be ready for temperature-checks at the door and limited housekeeping.

Don’t worry, your friends at TWIJ will mind the store while you’re gone. Good luck out there on the job hunt, and stay safe.
