NPR visits the Baltimore nonprofit providing school supplies for teachers

As educators start getting ready to head back to school, some are heading to a warehouse in Woodberry for materials.
This week, NPR’s Morning Edition profiled the Baltimore Teacher Supply Swap, which takes donations and gathers gently-used supplies, then provides them to teachers who would otherwise have to spend their own money to outfit learning environments.

Cofounder Melissa Badeker told NPR about how the organization grew from community center gatherings. The nonprofit moved to its current home on Union Ave. in Woodberry in May. Along the way, Badeker participated in Johns Hopkins’ Social Innovation Lab and was an Open Society Institute fellow.
It now has a membership model, offering educators access to two visits and five tote bags a week. The Supply Swap also delivering materials straight to schools with a Supply Mobile.
Last year, the Swap gave away more than $127,000 worth of supplies, Badeker told NPR.
