3 DC-area companies are among the top remote workplaces in the US

Plus, the vast majority of workers surveyed don't want to return to an office full time.

Two years into the pandemic, we’re long past stay-at-home orders and lockdowns that forced employees to embrace working from home. Still, remote and flexible work setups remain dominant in the DC region and elsewhere.

This week, career service site FlexJobs released its Top 100 Companies to Watch for Remote Jobs in 2022 list. Based on job posting data from 57,000 companies across the US, FlexJobs determined the 100 companies with the highest amount of remote job postings on its board in 2021. And three companies from the DC area made it on — meaning that the DMV is still very much a remote-friendly zone.

The rise in remote work is a trend that appears to be here to stay, based on FlexJobs data. According to another recent survey from the company, only 3% of workers would prefer to return to the office full-time once it is safe to do so.

“The important role that remote work plays in today’s modern workplace cannot be underestimated, and smart companies, like the ones featured on this list, will formally integrate remote work into their business model for the long-term,” said Sara Sutton, FlexJobs founder and CEO, in a statement. “Our intent in creating this list in 2014 remains the same in 2022, which is to help job seekers connect with companies that are not only providing remote career opportunities but also leading the way for a more flexible future of work.”

In 2021, FlexJobs found a 12% increase from 2020 in the number of remote job listings, and there was also more variety among job titles and levels. While tech, IT, healthcare and customer service still held a stronghold, they didn’t dominate in the remote work world as much as they had in the past. On the other hand, FlexJobs reported that accounting and finance, marketing as well as HR fields grew significantly.

Here are the DC-area companies that made the cut:

  • Stride (#42): The Herndon, Virginia e-learning company has course offerings for K-12 students, school districts, colleges and career prep. It’s made the FlexJobs list every year since 2014.
  • FlexProfessionals (#46): FlexProfessionals, HQ’d in Fairfax, Virginia with additional offices in Arlington, matches employers and potential hires for part-time or flexible work.
  • American Red Cross (#63): The national charity for health, disaster relief and blood donation is headquartered in DC.

Of note, Stride also appeared in the #5 spot on a different list measuring the top 100 companies to watch for remote work from VirtualVocations.

Based on its jobs board data, FlexJobs also determined the top remote work industries of 2021, which it also thinks will be the ones to watch in 2022. It’s expecting computer and IT; accounting and finance; marketing; medical and health; project management; customer service and HR and recruiting to be the top remote work industries in the coming years.
