Osmosis: medical education app wins $50K at Milken-Penn competition

Osmosis, a medical education review app, was the big winner at this year’s Milken-Penn Graduate School of Education Business Plan Competition, ending the day with $50,000 in prize money. The Philadelphia-based company won the grand prize ($25,000), beating out 11 other edtech startups, as well as another prize of $25,000. Osmosis was also recently awarded $150,000 by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Osmosis, which graduated from the DreamIt Health health IT accelerator in 2013, was one of four Philadelphia-based companies that made the finals of the annual competition. Each finalist has the opportunity to join the Education Design Studio, Inc. (EDSi), an edtech accelerator run in partnership with Penn GSE. EDSi will announce the participating companies in the coming weeks, said CEO Brien Walton.

Professor Word, a locally-based vocabulary tool that graduated from GoodCompany Group‘s social entrepreneurship accelerator last year, won the prize for “Innovation in the fields of Special Education and At-Risk Students” ($20,000).

Other winners hailed from New York City, San Francisco and Tanzania.
