Comcast invested heavily against pro-fiber Seattle mayor [Comcast Roundup]

“While Comcast denies there is any connection between [Mayor Mike] McGinn’s broadband policies and their donations, the company has given thousands of dollars to PACs that have, in turn, given heavily to anti-McGinn groups.” (State Sen. Ed Murray currently has a lead over incumbent McGinn, according to reports.)

  • Seattle Mayor: I have Comcast, and I would like better service [Washington Post] A Q&A with Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn, who “has made gigabit fiber Internet access a cornerstone of his time in office and his reelection campaign.”
  • Comcast is donating heavily to defeat the mayor who is bringing gigabit fiber to Seattle [Washington Post] “While Comcast denies there is any connection between [Mayor Mike] McGinn’s broadband policies and their donations, the company has given thousands of dollars to PACs that have, in turn, given heavily to anti-McGinn groups.” (State Sen. Ed Murray currently has a lead over incumbent McGinn, according to reports.)
  • Why Comcast Rolled Out Cable, Internet And Even HBO On The Cheap [Forbes] “Media behemoths are slowly adapting to the realties of an on-demand universe, where viewers only pay for the programming they want, where they want to watch it.”
  • Comcast doesn’t want to hook up with Netflix any time soon [GigaOM] “Don’t hold your breath for a Netflix app on your Comcast set-top box: Netflix has started to strike deals with pay TV operators abroad to run its app on their devices, and CEO Reed Hastings recently told investors that he would love to be on Comcast’s gear as well — but Comcast cable operations CEO Neil Smit said during the company’s earnings call that this is “not really a high priority” for Comcast, according to Home Media Magazine.”
  • Time Warner’s CEO isn’t worried about those HBO plus broadband deals [GigaOM] “Comcast is offering broadband, local channels and HBO for $40 a month – but Time Warner’s CEO isn’t worried. Maybe because the sticker price isn’t what you end up paying.”

Entrepreneurship isn’t ‘pro-business,’ it’s pro-newcomer — and America 250 is the moment to say so

Entrepreneurship isn’t ‘pro-business,’ it’s pro-newcomer — and America 250 is the moment to say so

• America 250 is a branding fight. Entrepreneurs, who poll well across the US political spectrum, are natural messengers. • Pro-entrepreneurship means pro-creation, not pro-incumbent business, so stop letting the terms blur. • Three issues to stand for: Advancing science, legal immigration and economic mobility. Pro-entrepreneurship is not necessarily pro-business.…
