After months of operating somewhat illegally in Delaware, Uber has finally struck a long-awaited deal with DelDOT.
Signed late last week, the memorandum requires Uber drivers to get background checks and minimum insurance coverage — which is what we previously learned was the main concern of the 64-car-strong taxi cab opposition.
The memorandum does come with some restrictions. For instance, drivers are prohibited from soliciting their services to potential passengers, as they’ve been doing at Wilmington’s Amtrak station.

“It’s a good step forward for Delaware,” DelDOT spokesman Geoff Sundstrom told Delaware Public Media. “We’re a tourist dependent economy. We have a lot of visitors from other states. Anything we can do to facilitate transportation is probably a good thing for us.”
