AddThis knows a lot about how people act and interact on the internet.
The social sharing widgets developed by this Vienna, Va.-based company are used on over 15 million websites around the world. Recently, AddThis took a look at the data gathered from about 1 trillion page views by more than 2 billion global users to get some clues on how the world used the internet in 2015.
Here are some of the trends they found:

  • There was more mobile traffic (54 percent) than desktop traffic (46 percent) in 2015, but people were still much more likely to share on desktop. Desktop sharing came in at 62 percent, while mobile sharing accounted for 38 percent.
  • That said, 2015 saw a 32 percent growth in mobile sharing over numbers from 2014.
  • The U.S. is 11 percent less mobile (in terms of web traffic) than the rest of the world.
  • Mobile internet continues to be very popular in the developing world, however — many areas of the Middle East are more than 50 percent more likely to use mobile than the rest of the world.
  • Japan loves sharing to Twitter — AddThis users in Japan are 159 percent more likely to share to Twitter than the rest of the world.
  • The Netherlands, meanwhile, is no less than 219 percent above the global index on sharing to LinkedIn, of all places.

There is a lot more interesting information in the AddThis data, including what kind of content users are more likely to view and/or share on both mobile and desktop. Take a look at this infographic for yourself — what’s the standout statistic in your mind?
