Litecast-Balticore LLC, a broadband services company specializing in “dark” fiber infrastructure, has been acquired by the Colorado-based Zayo Group for $22 million, reports the Baltimore Business Journal.

With offices in the Emerging Technology Center in Canton, Litecast “owns and operates the leading Baltimore metropolitan fiber network, connecting over 110 on-net buildings, including all of the city’s major data centers and carrier hotel facilities,” according to a press release from Zayo announcing the deal.
Zayo, itself a bandwidth infrastructure company, plans to maintain “a strong presence in the Baltimore market,” and says the acquisition will help bolster its existing fiber network in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. region.
On its surface, the deal appears to be a smart play by Zayo Group. Litecast, as the Baltimore Business Journal reported in 2007, has already done some heavy lifting in this city, having built a 25-mile network of fiber-optic cables through downtown Baltimore (at a cost of $1.8 million). With any acquisition of local firm from afar, the question is if there might job losses, something that isn’t yet clear.
