A computer science class in Howard County is receiving backing from a local web development firm.
OmniTI provided $2,000 in funding for 20 girls at Deep Run Elementary, which is the full amount necessary to provide a computer science class. Run by HowGirlsCode, the eight-week after-school course introduces the basics of computer science to girls in 3rd-5th grades.
The class at the Elkridge school features instruction in algorithms, conditionals and debugging from tech teacher Lisa Wenzel, as well as guest speakers. Two of the sessions are set to feature speakers from OmniTI.
HowGirlsCode offers the course at five other schools, as well as courses in robotics, scratch and HTML. The nonprofit is also planning another session of its summer camp. Last year, the sessions were held at UMBC.
