With the FCC potentially clearing the way for municipal broadband and even the likes of Westminster, Md., going around Comcast, there’s new energy behind organizing for cheaper and faster internet service.
Locally, the Baltimore Broadband Coalition has emerged as a voice on the issue. The group was formed after residents voiced dissatisfaction with current internet service offerings at a community meeting in Roland Park.
The grassroots group’s goals include bringing open fiber infrastructure to Baltimore and encouraging competition among providers to ultimately create better service and lower costs. The group says it has been presenting ideas to the Mayor’s office and has been in touch with fiber providers.
As a means of gathering input, the Coalition is circulating an online survey that asks what residents want to see in terms of improved internet service.

The group also launched a crowdfunding campaign through CrowdFiber. As of April 26, over $18,500 was pledged.
