Foodem, an ETC-based startup that bills itself as the “only business-to-business online food marketplace,” doesn’t consider the food distribution giant Sysco as competition, said Foodem founder Kash Rehman in a recent interview:
Sysco, you know, is a distributor that has tons of overhead. They have trucks, they have salespeople, they have warehouses. We are a marketplace, we actually one day think that Sysco will join Foodem because they would want to get more customers via our platform …
As Technically Baltimore reported in May, Foodem recently raised an angel funding round of $600,000 and released version 2.0 of its online platform, which allows wholesale buyers — like hotels, restaurants and catering companies — to connect directly with food manufacturers and distributors.
