The University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will launch a Cyber Scholars program in 2013 thanks to a $1 million grant from Northrop Grumman Foundation, according to the Baltimore Business Journal.

Beginning in 2013, the program will award scholarships, internships and opportunities for advanced research to the 15-20 students selected annually to participate. The program will aim to address cyber security workforce shortages by drawing more women and minorities to the industry, UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski said Wednesday. [more]
Hrabowski made the announcement during the second day of the 2012 CyberMaryland conference at the Baltimore Convention Center.
The UMBC president “also announced the creation of a Cybersecurity Center,” reports the Baltimore Business Journal. The new center “will serve as an umbrella for [UMBC’s] existing cyber education programs and resources.”
Both the Cyber Scholars program and the Cybersecurity Center are in addition to the $2.5 million National Science Foundation grant UMBC received to provide scholarships for 22 students studying information assurance and cybersecurity, as Technically Baltimore reported in August.
