What do you get when you mix free booze, free pizza, hip-hop star Q-Tip and more than 500 New Yorkers?
A pretty sick party.
Coworking colossus WeWork definitely endeared themselves to the Dumbo community last night with its “Hip Hop and Pizza” party.
The event was supposed to start with opening remarks from WeWork’s cofounder and CEO Adam Neumann, but he let the DJ get the crowd pumped up for more than 90 minutes before he would take the stage.
While it’s unclear if that was strategic, it was clearly a great move. Neumann took the stage to a raucous ovation from the crowd — partly aided by the flowing free beer, wine and shots, of course.
“Brooklyn is the energy center of the world right now,” Neumann said. “We’re so grateful to all of you for coming here, and we’re going to do more of this.”
Clearly reading the atmosphere of the room, Neumann took a moment to deliver some motivational messages to the crowd, which were extremely well-received.
“If you build a business that you care about, it will work,” Neumann said loudly into the microphone, “you will convince people to join you, you will raise money, you will do what the world needs and you will succeed.”
He also knew what else the crowd wanted to hear.
“Now, let’s get some more shots in here!”

DJ Vikas played a great mix of current hits and old-school hip-hop throughout the evening that kept the energy high for hours, and then WeWork lowered the boom and brought out New York-native Q-Tip.
The founding member of the legendary hip hop group “A Tribe Called Quest” spun a few records and hyped up the crowd for a bit, but he delivered what everyone wanted and grabbed the mic to perform a few of his own songs.
With WeWork growing rapidly as a whole and planning further expansion in Brooklyn, and a simmering labor fight with its cleaners, it’s clear this party was meant to drum up excitement about the brand — and it definitely worked.
