Tribute-video startup raises $13K; Amazon taps 3D-printing partner [Startup Roundup]

Who’s getting money?

Andrew Horn‘s Williamsburg venture, We Tribute, Inc., raised $12,500, according to an SEC filing. It characterized the round as “other,” (rather than equity or debt). On his LinkedIn page, Horn describes it as “what we believe to be ‘the most meaningful gift on earth.'” In short, it’s a way to make a film of different people saying how great someone is. On his Twitter feed, he posted this birthday tribute his friends made for him on YouTube and said it was the inspiration for the company (we hope the new app teaches people to hold their mobile in landscape when taking video):

Home sensor startup, Birdi, raised $700K in early seed money, as we reported yesterday.

Nonprofit digital lit journal The New Inquiry, which we covered early on, is in the middle of a flash fundraiser. As of this writing, if they can raise $2,000 more, for a grand total of $25,000, by Friday, a donor will match it.

Who’s making moves?

Mixee Labs, a 3D printing company that makes customized products, has been announced as one of Amazon’s new partners in bespoke goods, according to CNN Money. The company is shown to be located right on the border of Bushwick and East Williamsburg, according to its Facebook page. It’s not the extent of Amazon’s presence here. It also has its photo facility on Kent Avenue.

Vyer Films has announced a new tiered subscription model as well as a 14-day free trial. Now you can have access to everything for $20/month, just the new releases at $15/month or get a discount by buying six months at a time, for $99. We previously covered the company that curates its films from festivals worldwide.

The Brooklyn Public Library is collaborating with the rest of the city’s library systems to begin lending out lots of WiMax devices, so that families without broadband can have it in the home. As we’ve previously reported, BPL is probably already the biggest provider of free Internet access in the borough and the demand is only growing. The project is largely funded by The Knight Foundation. We are staying in touch with the library so that we can report on it when the devices become available.
