The latest Brooklyn company to get the B Corp label is Keap, the candle maker started by two ex-Googlers.
The company announced its certification as a B Corp, a sort of ethical seal of approval, on Instagram Wednesday morning.
“B Corps inspire all businesses to compete not only to be the best in the world, but to be the best *for* the world,” the Industry City–based company posted. “We were truly inspired by other B Corps (@patagonia @publicsupply @cotopaxi @cravefishbar @warbyparker @benandjerrys to name a few) and proud to now join their ranks!”

The B Corp certification comes from a Philly-area organization called B Lab. B Lab reviews all parts of a company’s business practices, including the sustainability of its ingredients and supply chain, its labor practices and whether or not it donates philanthropically (Keap donates a portion of its revenue to the climate change charity SolarAid). There are currently 2,221 certified B Corps in the world, 19 of which are in Brooklyn (these include Etsy, Kickstarter, Runa, Farmigo and Revivn).
When we interviewed the founders of Keap, Stephen Tracy and Harry Doull, back when they were just starting out, in 2015, they explained to us their careful sourcing of what goes into their candles, all of which they’ve tested themselves.
“They’re using coconut wax from California, fragrance from a perfumery in the Bronx and glasses that can be easily washed out and reused as whiskey tumblers instead of being thrown away,” we wrote.
