South by Southwest, meet Philly.
That’s the idea, at least.
After attending this year’s SXSW and seeing all the regional presence (NY Tech Meetup had a table, as did places like Japan and even Montana), Zivtech co-founder Alex Urevick-Ackelsberg realized: Why not Philly?
Urevick-Ackelsberg has got a whole vision for a Philly presence at the festival, which he detailed in an enthusiastic email to the Philly Startup Leaders listserv. He wants Philly’s tech, music and food scenes to represent. (To be sure, every year there is Philly representation at the wide-ranging annual Austin pilgrimage of urban creatives, but Alex U-A wants a clearer presence).
The next step, he says, is figuring out how much a SXSW presence would cost and trying to identify sponsors. He held a preliminary planning meeting last week and says he’ll hold another one shortly.
SXSW 2013 is nearly nine months away, but Urevick-Ackelsberg is determined. He says it’s all about getting people excited about Philly, getting them to consider the city as a place to do business.
“The main thing I’m interested in,” he said, “is getting people to think of Philly as a business community.”
We can get behind that.
