Last year, nearly 200 technologists and nonprofit workers joined together over 48 hours one weekend to produce website and web apps and offer technical services worth more than $250,000 total to 21 Maryland-area nonprofits.
This weekend, Baltimore GiveCamp hopes to break that record.
Register for Baltimore GiveCamp 2012, taking place Oct. 19-21 at UMBC.
Sponsored by the Central Maryland Association of .NET Professionals, GiveCamp is a “weekend-long event where software developers, designers, and database administrators donate their time to create custom software for non-profit organizations,” according to its website. Participants can either stay at UMBC all weekend or leave each evening. There is, however, one catch: all source code developed must be turned over to the respective nonprofits by weekend’s end.

Since its founding in 2007, GiveCamp has donated more than $1 million in time and services to close to 150 nonprofits. This year, a contingent of Baltimore city public school students working with the Digital Harbor Foundation will be in attendance, says Ed Mullin, CIO of Logical Consulting Services, a GiveCamp sponsor.
“I’m thinking these kids will learn a lot from sitting with technical professionals and helping them build sites for charities,” said Mullin in an e-mail. “Not all education happens in the classroom.”
