Etsy decorated its new office with furniture it bought on Etsy

According to one building-certification group, it's the largest, greenest office building in the world.

Etsy announced last week that its new global headquarters in Dumbo is super environmentally conscious.

The building achieved the Living Building Challenge “Petal” certification from the International Living Future Institute, making it the largest building in the world with a certification for greenness that high.

The company shared some interesting factoids about how it got the building that green, including that it furnished the office with furniture hand-made by people who sell on Etsy.

We only used wood that was invasive, salvaged, reused, or sourced from responsibly managed forests (Forest Stewardship Council certified). We installed solar panels on our roof to help power our building. We surrounded workstations with greenery and took steps to ensure that the air quality inside is even better than it is outside. We also filled the space with art and furniture made responsibly and sustainably by local artists and Etsy sellers.

We recently covered Etsy’s focus on hiring a racially diverse and gender-equitable staff. Of Etsy’s overall employee totals, more than half are women (53.9 percent to be exact, in addition to the half-percent of staff who identify in some way other than the gender binary, according to a statement given to Technical.ly). Even at leadership levels, a chronic challenge for gender diversity, the company is split evenly.
