Breaking into any industry is difficult, and the game industry seems to have more barriers to entry than most.
To help would-be gamers out, the NYU Game Center is hosting a workshop Thursday night called Strategy Guide: Breaking Into the Game Industry. The workshop is free and open to the public and will try provide some answers to questions like:
- How do I get an internship?
- What do game companies want to see in a job applicant?
- Should I start my own company or work for someone else?
- Can I really make a living making games?
The panel will include:
- Amanda Cosmos, QA Lead, Dots
- Shervin Ghazazani, Technical Designer, Digital Extremes
- Tom Rassweiler, VP of Games, Arkadium
- Maria Saint Martin, Systems Designer, Avalanche Studios
- Joe Tringali, Cofounder, 5th Cell
Last month we did a story on how hard it can be for new gamers to get into the space. Collin Cummings started a company called PlayWell, which helps people along this path. Here’s what he said he found about the game world after he graduated from a prominent design incubator.
That was the moment. After I went to the program I realized I needed a better network. I got like a huge shrug and that was a huge shocker, working with a company as large as Google. There’s gotta be a weird lack of infrastructure out there, as compared with code schools. With games it’s still weirdly archaic.
Breaking Into the Game Industry will take place Thursday, Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. on the 8th floor of 2 Metrotech Center.
