Kevin Potere was shopping for a unique gift for a friend a few years ago, but he couldn’t find an item that fit his needs.
“I thought it would be really fun to hide a flask inside of a book but I wasn’t able to find anything,” he said. “I talked to some friends of mine about taking old books to convert them. I gave the gift to my friends, they loved it and we started making more of them.”
That’s how Bender Bound, Inc. was born. Now, the company is launching a Kickstarter campaign called “Booze Books Chapter 2: Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.” The team is selling Sherlock Holmes books with a flask inside each book.

“I have personally always loved Sherlock Holmes,” Potere said of his literature choice for the project. “It’ s a timeless classic and I like the elements of mystery and intrigue.”
As of now, the Kickstarter campaign has almost 150 backers and pledges of more than $5,800. Potere is shooting for a $7,500 goal, with the funding going towards tooling, samples and the first production run.
“Originally I was cutting everything out by hand and now we are retooling and using more of the machine process,” said Potere. “In order to get that going we need to raise money for tooling and make samples and fine tune.”
While the Bender Bound kickstarter focuses on The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, the options for expansion are limitless.
“The really neat part about this project is [making books] for different occasions,” said Potere. “We can make books geared towards graduation, books geared towards Father’s Day and new parents.”
This is the second campaign Bender Bound has launched on Kickstarter; the first one surpassed its goal by 533 percent.
“Just the international reaction we’ve had, we’ve been getting orders from across Europe and Australia and Canada,” Potere said. “One of the most exciting aspects of the Kickstarter platform is that you can sell your products or you can raise money locally but you also have an international stage.”
