Uber sails into Annapolis

The ridesharing app launched its service in the state capital on Wednesday.

Uber is docking in Annapolis.
The popular ridesharing app now offers rides in the Maryland state capital, according to a Wednesday company blog post. Uber is available in Baltimore, Washington D.C. and about 40 other cities nationwide.
The base fare for an UberX vehicle in Annapolis is $2.76 plus 19 cents per minute and $1.52 per mile, according to Uber’s website.
The move into Annapolis appears to settle some doubt about Uber’s future in the state. It comes not long after state legislators there failed to pass a bill that would have exempted Uber and competitor Lyft (which currently serves Baltimore and Washington, D.C.) from common carrier status. Both carriers lobbied hard for the bill.
Uber called the legislation “critical” after a Public Service Commission staff counsel opinion that declared it a “motor vehicle-for-hire service” subject to common carrier rules.
