Science Center’s $110M residential high rise will have a rooftop pool

The University City Science Center broke ground yesterday on 3601 Market Street, where its first residential high-rise will be located.

The 28-story, 443,000 square-foot building will have retail on the first floor, apartments and studios above, parking for 200 cars and 140 bikes and a rooftop pool, according to a release. The $110 million building should be finished by spring 2015.

The Science Center first announced the project in January 2013. The construction was originally slated to launch in the fall of 2013.

It’s a move inspired by technology communities in other cities, said Science Center president Stephen Tang.

“The most successful innovation centers like Cambridge, Mass., and San Francisco’s Mission Bay have woven into their communities places for people to live and play,” he said in a statement.

It’s also another addition to the evolution of University City, an effort between partners that include the Science Center and Drexel University.
