Ride the Ice Bumper Cars at the Delaware State Fairgrounds

The Delaware State Fairgrounds, in Harrington, Del.,  is the mystical land of show chickens, antique tractors and country music concerts in the summer. But in the winter, since partnering with Colorado-based IBC International last year, they also have some pretty cool recreational tech: Ice Bumper Cars.

For all you ice bumper cars neophites out there, the slick rides look like mini hovercrafts (actually, they have ice motor wheels that are controlled by a pair of joysticks) and do exactly what the name implies: they turn an ice rink into a bumper car ring.

Yup.

Invented by Mike Farny, who developed the cars while working at Howelsen Ice Arena in Steamboat Springs, Colo., Ice Bumper cars are a hot trend, but they’re far from ubiquitous. On the East Coast, they can be found at ice rinks in Brick, N.J., and Providence, R.I., – and that’s about it, aside from Harrington.

Pretty weekend road trip-worthy for when the winter doldrums set in.
