QED, the University City Science Center‘s tech transfer program, received $350,000 from the Pa. Department of Health, according to the Science Center. Founded in 2009, QED funds local university research in hopes of getting it to market.
Though QED is open to 21 participating universities in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey, the Department of Health money is restricted to Pa.-based universities, the Science Center said. The same went for previous QED funds ($500,000) from the state’s Department of Community and Economic Development, though that money has already been spent down, said Science Center spokeswoman Kristen Fitch.
The city’s Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation also committed up to $500,000 ($100,000 per year starting in 2014) to fund Philadelphia-based universities through QED. The single biggest supporter of the QED program is the federal government, which backed the program to the tune of $1 million and doesn’t restrict its funds location-wise.
QED opened its seventh round of applications earlier this month.
