‘Philly companies build stuff that actually works’: Developing Philly

Watch the sixth episode of the documentary web series to hear more about bootstrapping, the challenge of creating a business in Philly and why people do it despite that.

What sets a Philly startup apart from others?

They’re “a little less hype, a little more substance,” said John Loftus, managing director  at Radnor venture capital firm ICG.

Or, put another way, “Philly companies build stuff that actually works,” as Philly Startup Leaders president Bob Moul said in the latest episode of Developing Philly, the documentary web series on the Philly tech scene.

Watch it below to hear more about bootstrapping, the challenge of creating a business in Philly and why people do it despite that.

It’s part of that Philadelphia business narrative that has tended to avoid the boom and bust that comes with more risk tolerant markets — yes, New York and the Valley, which see big heights and big lows, but also boom towns like Las Vegas, on which an entrepreneurial community may be built differently.

Don’t forget about the Developing Philly season finale screening and marathon this Wednesday at the Comcast Center. A panel with several speakers featured in the series will follow.
