NaturePHL, the multi-org effort to get Philly families to explore the great outdoors, can now link parents up with a useful map of local outdoor spots like parks and trails.

The map was built by South Philly design shop P’unk Ave, no strangers to linking up trails with technology.

NaturePHL is led by the Schuykill Center for Environmental Education, in partnership with CHOP, Philadelphia Parks & Rec and the United States Forest Service.

“We worked with them to build an online platform that catalogs all of the parks and trails in Philadelphia so that families know where to go and play,” said P’unk Ave honcho Geoff DiMasi.

The program was officially announced today in a press conference at the Cobbs Creek Environmental Center.

“We are always encouraging at least one hour per day of physical activity as recommended by American Academy of Pediatrics,” Dr. Sharon Sutherland, a CHOP pediatrician, said in a press release. “Now we can help them in terms of where and how to make this happen with NaturePHL.”

Starting Aug. 1, CHOP docs will start prescribing kids with outdoor play along with their treatment as part of an effort to get kids to ditch the iPad and get some playing time outdoors. (BTW, Editor-in-Chief Zack Seward, father of three, approves.)
