Open Air: look at this simulation of ‘light sculptures’ on the Parkway planned for next month

They'll be controlled by smartphone-using Philadelphians.

Next month, beams of light will shine across the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and they’ll be controlled by smartphone-using Philadelphians.

Commissioned by the Association of Public Art and part of the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival & Philly Fringe and DesignPhiladelphia, Open Air is an interactive art project by Mexican artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer that uses a mobile app and searchlights to create “light sculptures” over the city sky. Lozano-Hemmer’s studio developed the app specifically for the project. The app, which will be available on iTunes soon, uses GPS and voice recognition software to control the searchlights.

Open Air will run nightly from September 20 – October 14 and smartphones will be available for loan for attendees. Get more details here.
