Having trouble getting your startup noticed? Need an angel investor? Starting next month, you can listen to Get Found Get Funded, a new D.C.-area podcast designed to give social entrepreneurs a leg up on the fundraising and publicity games. Hosts Aurelia Flores, Xina Eiland and Kristina Francis have four shows completed, and will speak weekly with founders, experts and investors about market trends and overcoming challenges.
“You have to be a little bit crazy to be an entrepreneur, but surround yourself with people who tell you that you can do it,” Flores told Technical.ly DC. “Most successful entrepreneurs are not successful the first time out, and we want to help people tell their stories so that they can get the money that they need.”
Flores, the managing member of the Athena Digital Media Group, was the in-house counsel for a Fortune 500 company in San Diego before moving to the D.C. area in 2012. She also participated in the Pipeline Angels Bootcamp in 2016, which focuses on social entrepreneurship. She currently invests in three companies – Aperiomics, Solstice and Fresh Bellies.
Podcast co-host Xina Eiland is the founder and CEO of public relations firm X+PR and Kristina Francis is founder and CEO of IT consulting firm Esteem Logic, an IT training and consulting firm.
“I grew up in a working class family, and at times we were on food stamps and welfare,” Flores said. “For me, part of the reason for the podcast is because I want people to know what the possibilities are out there. Helping small business owner is about allowing them to do something they have a genius at. That’s why entrepreneurs can have so much power.”
Get Found – Get Funded is recorded Thursday at 7 p.m. at Blis.fm, and the first guest will be Lynnette Abbott, founder of Craftmyoccasion.com, a new event planning company celebrating children of color that raised over $20,000 through Kickstarter in August.
“How we communicate new ideas to people who know nothing about something, and engage and connect with them can be a powerful tool,” Flores said. “I see a lot of failure coming rarely from poor quality of product or services, it’s usually not knowing who their audience is and how to get in front of them.”
