Why Sam Whitaker founded *another* clinical research tech startup, Mural Health

The entrepreneur, who previously cofounded Greenphire, spoke to Founding Philly's Zachary Brand about both companies' origins, and what he learned from his earlier successes and challenges.

What lessons did Sam Whitaker take from building one clinical research tech company to building another?

Whitaker is the cofounder and co-CEO of Mural Health, a Berwyn-based technology company dedicated to making it easy to be a participant in clinical trials. Mural Health’s technology platform, Mural Link, is a patient-first technology that is primarily designed to benefit the study participant, but also improves site operations and drives strategic value to study sponsors. The participant payment solution modernizes the way research sites execute payments and participants receive them.

Prior to Mural Health, Whitaker founded Greenphire, a provider of clinical payment and communication tools. Over 13 years, the company grew and eventually reached a value of over $1 billion with only $2.2 million raised from investors, according to Whitaker.

“That strikes me as being one of the most extraordinary storylines in that journey that never really gets talked about,” he said during the latest episode of the Founding Philly podcast. “There are other examples of that type of — call it capital efficiency. But in today’s world, that’s few and far between.”

After a successful exit with Greenphire, despite the challenges of starting a business in the clinical trial space, Whitaker was motivated to start Mural Health in January 2022 for reasons different from those that led him to start Greenphire.

Listen to Whitaker share his career journey in the payments and clinical trial space, why he built Greenphire and now Mural Health, and his mission to modernize the way research sites handle transactions and the participant experience:
