The Mid-Atlantic Venture Association (MAVA) announced the first round of companies set to be showcased at its new conference, SURGE 2019.

The D.C.-based association announced in May that it would be expanding on its TechBUZZ event with the new event. SURGE will focus on giving up to 50 early-stage tech startups some extra counsel as they scale their companies.

This initial cohort was selected by an independent review and selection committee of active investors and advisors. The selected companies each have less than $2 million in annual recurring revenue and were picked from a pool of applicants from 15 states and four countries.

“These startups will be joined throughout the day by corporate industry, active investors, growth and later-stage companies, and leading researchers — all who play an important role for fostering next-generation commercial company growth,” said Julia Spicer, executive director of MAVA, in a statement.

The SURGE program spans a full year, with an in-person conference held on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at The Hotel at the University of Maryland. Throughout SURGE, selected companies will get one-on-one meetings with investors, engage in closed-door roundtable discussions and gain access to an exclusive digital platform that MAVA is releasing later this year.

Ahead of the Oct. 2 event, MAVA will also be announcing another group of companies in the momentum category, which will be 10 tech companies that have proven customer traction and $2 million to $25 million in annual recurring revenue.

Of the 27 companies, 24 hail from the DMV region, including WireWheel, Treble, Senseware, Kerb, Ordway and INKY Technology.

The public, tech advisors, investors and startup companies are invited to attend the conference.
