No naked actors.
That was the rallying cry for Mauckingbird Theatre‘s crowdfunding campaign to raise $4,250 for costumes for its rendition of Oscar Wilde‘s “The Importance of Being Earnest.” Nakedness aside, costumes are also a centerpiece of the play, which focuses on class issues.
It raised nearly $5,000 in just over two weeks. Think about how a regional theater like that might have raised that money before the crowdfunding movement spread so widely, likely approaching a foundation or wealthy donors. Or, in other words, far fewer people would be involved in the effort.
The show runs from Aug.7 – Aug. 25 at the Off-Broad Street Theater at First Baptist Church (1636 Sansom St.).
