Mauckingbird Theatre crowdfunds $5k for costumes

No naked actors. That was the rallying cry for Mauckingbird Theatre's crowdfunding campaign to raise $4,250 for costumes for its rendition of Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest."

No naked actors.

That was the rallying cry for Mauckingbird Theatre‘s crowdfunding campaign to raise $4,250 for costumes for its rendition of Oscar Wilde‘s “The Importance of Being Earnest.” Nakedness aside, costumes are also a centerpiece of the play, which focuses on class issues.

It raised nearly $5,000 in just over two weeks. Think about how a regional theater like that might have raised that money before the crowdfunding movement spread so widely, likely approaching a foundation or wealthy donors.  Or, in other words, far fewer people would be involved in the effort.

The show runs from Aug.7 – Aug. 25 at the Off-Broad Street Theater at First Baptist Church (1636 Sansom St.).
