There’s a slight chance you may have gotten an email or two last week about a recent change in European privacy laws.
The General Data Protection Regulation became law in 2016 but entered its official enforcement period last Friday. Because the legislation affects all businesses that deal with data from European citizens, most companies in the digital realm are subject to the set of standards.
To help local companies get caught up on the subject, customer experience firm Hero Digital is cohosting a panel on GDPR alongside Philadelphia’s Swedish American Chamber of Commerce and the Norwegian American Chamber of Commerce.

The lineup of experts for the June 7 event, happening at Hero’s Manayunk offices, includes:
- Jordan Fischer, cofounder of XPAN Law Group
- Shiraz Saeed, national practice leader at Cyber Risk
- Jennifer Lendler, president of Alea Advisors
“The goal of the event is to gain more insight into how GDPR will affect American businesses, specifically discussing some of the known challenges and how can you overcome them,” said Hero Digital project manager Maria Johansson, a Swedish national who facilitated the connection between the company and the SACC. “The panel of experts in law, blockchain and tech will help guide us through the current status of the regulation, and discuss what we might expect in the future.”
Get tickets ($15)Though the general public here in the U.S. has only recently, large corporations have been working for months to comply with the new set of privacy requirements. Center City-based Clarip, makers of a “privacy management platform” saw an uptick in business since the law was passed.
