More than five years ago, the New Castle County Chamber of Commerce launched what became its Emerging Enterprise Center as a way to extend its traditional small business services into the popular world of startup company incubation.
In late 2013, the EEC received its official, independent 501c nonprofit tax status, making it a separately funded program housed at the Chamber of Commerce in New Castle on Penn Way Avenue and in partnership with the New Castle County government, said Frank DeSantis, the program manager who joined the effort in September 2012.
The industries the EEC houses has ranged from the web to consumer products.
In an update in the fall, the EEC looked at its progress so far over five years:
- the EEC has worked with 21 companies, including nine currently housed there.
- Five companies have graduated the program, including two in 2013.
- Over a two year period, 2011-2012, EEC companies generated $13 million in revenues and employed 33 people, according to the Chamber.
